When Hilary Russell began creating custom ceramic serving pieces for her gift shop (and Cotton Table Ceramics was born), she chose to paint on sturdy Italian bisque pottery. Each piece begins in a family-run business that starting working with ceramics over forty years ago. Clay is carefully formed in plaster molds and pressed. If the piece has handles, they are applied after the press, by hand. Then each one is smoothed by sponge before being fired in a kiln for fourteen hours. The result of such careful production is unmatchable quality and beautiful individuality.
Today, artists in Italy not only produce the pottery for Cotton Table Ceramics, but they also paint many of Hilary’s designs for our standard lines. We cherish the partnership we have with our Italian friends, and the beautiful pottery they provide.
